On Tuesday evening, the Randall Raiders used the final 12 minutes of the game to put an end to the Borger Bulldogs’ playoff hopes by getting the 2-3 win in District 5-4A play.
The Bulldogs held a 2-1 lead and were playing well enough on defense to hang on for the 2-1 win and turn to scoreboard watching the outcome between the Canyon and Amarillo Palo Duro game.
Unfortunately, the game took a dramatic turn in the 69th when the Raiders broke free for an open shot that sailed into the top part of the net to tie the game 2-2.
Then in the 78th minute, the Raiders essentially added insult to injury by finding an open corner of the goal for the go-ahead goal and escape Borger with the win.
The Bulldogs started the game strong and took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Lane Newcomb in the fifth minute of play.
The Bulldogs controlled much of the action of the first half and were able to go into halftime with a 2-0 lead, when George Sifuentes scored a goal in the 39th minute.
In the 49th minute, the Raiders got on the scoreboard on a penalty kick after the Bulldogs were called for a hand ball violation.
In the final 15 minutes of play, the Bulldogs had a couple good shots at the goal but were unable to get the ball inside the net to keep Randall from having the late comeback.
The Bulldogs entered Tuesday trailing Canyon by two points in the district standings for the final playoff berth. With the loss and one game left to play, the loss to Randall mathematically eliminated Borger from being able to catch Canyon in the standings.
The loss takes Borger to 2-7-2 in the district standings, while Randall improved to 2-9-0.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the 2012 season on Friday night when they host the Dumas Demons at 7:00 p.m.
