This weekend the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen (4-11) baseball team will begin WJCAC play hosting the New Mexico Junior College T-Birds (9-3).
The Plainsmen enter conference play struggling at the plate averaging only three runs over the last seven games.
Despite the scoring woes, several Plainsmen have done a good job putting the ball in play, led by Joel Villarreal hitting .341 in 14 games and Cesar Wong and Alfonso Aguilar who are both hitting .300 and have driven in 21 RBIs combined. Nolan Hoskins leads the team in homeruns with two.
On the mound, Zach Johnson and Sam Martin can be penciled in as two of the starts this weekend, with both currently holding 1-2 records and ERA’s around six.
Canyon native Brad Wieck has looked good in three appearances, holding a 4.5 ERA with a 1-0 record.
The T-Birds appear to have a team that can depend on a solid pitching staff to win games by having a team ERA of just 4.71.
Sam Street and Ryan Harper lead the T-Birds on the mound with both holding ERAs under 2.25.
The four game series between the T-Birds and Plainsmen will begin at noon with the first two games. The series will conclude on Sunday with the doubleheader starting at noon.
