PLAINVIEW-On Saturday afternoon, a comeback just was not in the cards for the Borger Bulldogs in their 3A Regional Quarterfinal series with the Lubbock Cooper Pirates.
The Pirate hitters did a good job flexing their muscles by sending five balls over the fence to take game two and get the series sweep by a score of 11-0 at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview.
Borger senior pitcher Acton Smith started the game on the mound pretty solid by only giving up three hits in the first three innings. Unfortunately, two of those hits belonged to the Pirates two top hitters, Ethan Kohle and Scotland Church, who sent the ball over the fence for solo homeruns to give Lubbock Cooper a 0-2 lead.
The Bulldog bats did a better job at the plate making contact compared to game one, but it proved to be one of those games where the Bulldog hits seemed to go right to where a Pirate player was out on the field instead of finding the open gap.
In the top of the third inning, junior Max Lusk reached third base on a single by senior Garrett Irwin. However, Lusk and Irwin would be stranded on base as a pop out to leftfield allowed the Pirates to get off the field without giving up a run.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lubbock Cooper broke the game wide open by connecting for three two-run homeruns on their way to scoring nine runs in the inning to take a 0-11 lead and end the game by keeping Borger off the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning to force the run-rule.
Adam Taylor got the win for the Pirates, going five innings giving up just two hits while striking out five.
Smith got the loss on the mound, going three and 2/3 innings giving up eight hits and 11 runs while striking out four Lubbock Cooper hitters.
Lubbock Cooper improves to 31-5 on the season and advances to take on Brownwood this weekend in the 3A Regional Semi-Finals.
For Borger, the great 2011 season comes to an end with a record of 18-13-1.
