PANHANDLE-Perhaps due to the cold weather, on Tuesday night the Borger Bulldogs and Panhandle Panthers both struggled offensively and combined for 51 turnovers in Panther Gym in Panhandle.
Despite the turnovers and shooting woes, the Bulldogs were in a position to win the game by holding a 29-28 lead with 40 seconds to go.
Unfortunately, the Panthers got the breaks they needed in the final seconds to score the go ahead basket with four seconds on the clock in their 30-29 win.
The Bulldogs opened the game by going inside with Daniel Salinas and Seth Rawlinson putting in baskets for an early 4-0 lead.
However, the Bulldogs could not maintain the momentum from the quick start, as 12 first period turnovers took their toll and helped the Panthers take a 9-10 lead into the second period.
In the second period, a put in by Tyrell Haynes and a lay up by Grant Boren allowed the Bulldogs to take a three point lead, 15-12.
Twice in the second half, the Bulldogs were able to take four point leads. But turnovers continued to plague Borger by keeping them from pulling away and allowing Panhandle to stay in the game.
Late in the fourth period, the Panthers took a one point lead on a steal by Travis Hammer who went in for a lay up to make it a 27-28 score.
The Bulldogs responded with Salinas getting the ball to Haynes to give Borger a 29-28 lead with 40 seconds to go.
The Bulldogs received a big break when the Panthers turned the ball over with 28 seconds left.
The turnover caused the Panthers to resort to fouling, but with Panhandle still having three fouls to give the Bulldog were able to run about 15 seconds off the clock before having to shoot a free throw.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs would not convert the free throw giving the Panthers the opportunity to win the game.
The home team took advantage of that opportunity by finding Zach Berry open near the basket for an easy put in to give the Panthers the go ahead points.
The loss drops Borger to 4-6 for the season.
The Bulldogs will next take to the court Friday night when they host the Dumas Demons starting at 7:00 p.m. at Tex Hanna Gym.
