The Borger Lady Bulldogs were missing their top outside hitter and had to face the best team in District 1-3A in the No. 14 Pampa Lady Harvesters. Borger made the Lady Harvesters work but were eventually swept (20-25, 22-25, 20-25) Saturday in Borger.
Interim head coach Ken Barbour said he was pleased with how the team competed.
â€śI was very proud of how the girls responded and competed,â€ť Barbour said. â€śWe just wanted to play well. Iâ€™m disappointed that we lost but Iâ€™m pleased with the effort they gave.â€ť
Pampa (24-8, 4-0) pulled out to a four-point lead at 7-3 in Game one. Senior Kailyn Troxell scored three kills and senior Alanna Stephens scored two. The Lady Bulldogs went on a run and cut the lead in half. Emma Wood and Nellie Embers scored kills to cut Pampaâ€™s lead to 10-8. The Lady Harvesters outscored Borger 7-3 to increase their lead. Borger made one more run and cut Pampaâ€™s lead to two at 20-18. Pampa was able to close out the game with a kill by Stephens.
Early in the second game, the Lady Bulldogs pulled out to a 9-5 lead. Kaylee Purcell and Allyson Burrow scored kills to help lead the offense. The Lady Harvesters regrouped and went on a 7-3 run to tie the game at 12. Troxell contributed three kills during the run. The teams exchanged points on the next four serves but Borger scored three straight to take a 17-14 lead. Head coach Libby Garza took a timeout and Pampa responded outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 6-2. Stephens scored to put Pampa ahead 20-19. Senior Ramie Hutto scored to put Pampa up 24-21. The Lady Harvesters won when Borgerâ€™s serve went out of bounds.
In the third game, Pampa jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Lady Bulldogs came back and tied the game at nine. The teams exchanged points for a little well and then Pampa started to pull away. Junior Maddie Fatheree scored a kill and Troxell scored two to increase Pampaâ€™s lead to 17-13. Borger took a timeout but wasnâ€™t able to get closer than three.
The Lady Bulldogs (18-16, 0-4) host Dalhart Tuesday. Barbour said the team is not out of the playoff picture.
â€śI got complete confidence that we will win a couple games and make playoffs,â€ť Barbour said.
