The abatement of the old Golden Plains Community Hospital building is continuing to progress.
Dennis Jack, CEO of GPCH, shared a report on the progress at the meeting of the Hutchinson County Hospital District Board of Directors Monday evening. He reported the abatement is around 85 percent complete.
He said workers at the site have found some additional items that need to be taken care of, which will most likely drive up the costs for the abatement and demolition process another $40,000 at least. He said he was expecting another proposal from JE Dunn, the general contractor for the hospital project, to get the exact number.
“That is over and above the initial contract,” Jack said.
He said the company’s defense was that in the original specs, it planned to use a survey from APEX in the abatement process. However, the APEX survey did not take notice of a mastic that is on the roof of the old facility, and it is covered in asbestos. He said it would be a chore to get it completely removed.
The mastic is located on the membrane of the roof, and Jack said the company would have its work cut out for them in getting that asbestos abated.
He said it would be at least another month before the abatement would be completely finished. The demolition cannot be started until this is done. Jack said it will probably be the first or second week of February before this process moves forward. A Bobcat machine will be used for clearing out the inside areas, and the outside part of the hospital will be demolished with a track hoe.
