On Wednesday afternoon, the Borger Lady Bulldogs put together a solid game out on the field and got a good performance in the pitcher’s circle by sophomore Taylor Hickman. Unfortunately the solid effort would not lead to a win, as the Pampa Lady Harvesters used a dominating pitching performance by Alexa O’Brien to leave Agnes Howe Park with the 7-0 win in District 1-3A play.
O’Brien pitched seven innings giving up just two hits and no runs, while striking out 12 Lady Bulldog batters.
The game started as a pitchers’ duel with neither team getting much going at the plate in the first three innings.
In top of the fourth inning, the Lady Harvesters put two batters on base off a single to center field and a hit batter. The Lady Harvesters tried to use a bunt by Bailey Wichert to move runners around. However the bunt turned into a big play, as two Lady Bulldog errors allowed the Lady Harvesters to crack the scoreboard.
Two batters later, the Lady Bulldogs appeared to be on their way to leaving the field on a pop fly hit by Martecia Alexander. Unfortunately, the Lady Bulldogs weren’t able to make the play, leading to two more runs to score to give Pampa a 0-3 lead.
The Lady Harvesters tried to add to their lead by putting two runners on in the top of the fifth inning. But a good defensive play by Borger second baseman Dakota Karins kept the score 0-3.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lauren Hernandez got on base on an infield single and quickly put herself in scoring position on a stolen base. But the Lady Harvesters left Hernandez stranded on base by getting a strikeout and ground out to get off the field.
The Lady Bulldogs were in striking distance for late inning comeback win until the sixth inning. But a three run inside-the-park home run by Bailey Beck gave Pampa a 0-6 lead and essentially ended the chance for a Borger comeback.
Despite getting the loss, Hickman did a solid job on the mound by giving up nine hits and four earned runs, while striking out five Pampa batters.
The loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 0-4 in district play, while Pampa improves to 4-0.
