There are times in sports, when the scoreboard doesn’t really tell the whole story of how close or not so close a game truly was.
Wednesday evening in the BCAC, the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) Lady Broncos defeated the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen in straight sets 19-25, 27-29, 22-25 in WJCAC play.
The win was a clean sweep for NMMI, however each game in the match featured great plays from both teams, leading fans to understand why the two clubs had split their previous two meetings this season.
The Lady Plainsmen got off to a solid start in game one led by Kayla Silva and Alyne Bianchi combining for six kills.
However, NMMI used a small run to pull ahead by six and was able to maintain their lead to win game one.
Solid defense in the backcourt by Nikki Welter and Yessica Marenco, along with a couple of early blocks by Rebecca Moustapha and Nikki Moore, led the Lady Plainsmen to take an early lead in game two.
NMMI responded and were able to build a six point lead 13-18.
The Lady Plainsmen battled back until they finally tied the score at 24-24. Twice the Lady Plainsmen took the lead and were at game point but both times NMMI found a way to come up with kills to stay in the game before finally getting the 27-29 win.
In game three, Bianchi was able to rack up five more kills for the Lady Plainsmen.
However, a late 8-1 run gave NMMI the lead in game three for good leading to the Lady Plainsmen getting their second loss at home this season.
NMMI improves to 4-3 in the WJCAC standings, while the loss drops the Lady Plainsmen to 19-13 overall, 2-5 in conference play.
The Lady Plainsmen return to the court on Saturday afternoon hosting Western Texas College at 2:00 p.m. at the BCAC.
FPC stat leaders: Kills-Alyne Bianchi 13, Kayla Silva 7; Blocks-Rebecca Moustapha 5, Jordan Moore 2; Assists-Grecia Rivera 24; Digs-Melissa Goncalves 7, Yessica Marenco 7, Nikki Welter 6.
