NEWS: No Excuse For Abuse 5k run set for April 20

March 5, 2013

The Hutchinson County Child Welfare is preparing for its third annual “No Excuse For Abuse” 5k fun run/walk.
In honor of Child Abuse Awareness Month, the board will host the run on Saturday, April 20, 2013.
Early registration is $25 with packet pick-up and a guaranteed t-shirt Friday, April 19 from 4-7 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce at 613 North Main in Borger. Day of event registration is $25 with packets and available t-shirt sizes from 7:30-8 a.m.
The race will start and end at the Chamber of Commerce on Main Street. Proceeds will benefit the Rainbow Room of Borger and the Hutchinson County Child Welfare Board.
T-Shirts will be available for participants, ranging from Youth Medium to Adult 4X. Adult shirts 3X and 4X cost an extra $5. The form must be signed by the participant’s parent if the participant is under the age of 18.
Checks should be made payable to HCCWB 5K. Interested applicants need to mail their completed registration form and check to Hutchinson County Child Welfare Board, PO Box 1391, Borger, TX 79008.
Those who sign off to participate in the race must verify that they are adequately fit to participate in the event and assume any responsibility for any injury or accident that may occur during attendance or participation in the event.
The public is also encouraged to wear blue on this day for the “Go Blue” statewide campaign to raise awareness for child abuse.
“It’s time to focus on ways not only to protect children, but also to prevent abuse from ever occurring,” Carrie Burleson, member of the Child Welfare Board, said. “This is our opportunity to make a difference in young lives.”
Just Hutchinson County alone averages around 60 foster children at all times. Most of the children removed from homes locally have to be placed outside the county as there are not enough foster parents available in the county.
For further information on the 5k race or any of the events surrounding Child Abuse Prevention Month, contact your local Child Protective Services office or any Hutchinson County Child Welfare Board member.
Those with questions can contact Carrie at 670-9536. Forms for the race are available by logging onto www.rainbowroomofborger.org.
