NEWS: Further details released about Fritch house fire

April 1, 2013

Further details have been released pertaining to a house fire that occurred Sunday afternoon in Fritch.
The house, which was located at 8507 Highway 136 just outside of Fritch, was occupied by Jessica LeRaye Koenig, 39, and Shawn Dillon, 34. It was owned by Vi Krapp, who was out of town at the time of the fire, according to Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards.
The Fritch Fire Department was called to the scene at approximately 3 p.m. Sunday, March 31. Upon arrival of the firefighters, the structure was fully engulfed in flames. Both of the occupants were able to escape the burning home with minor burns and cuts, and were both treated at the scene by Fritch EMS officials.
Koenig and Dillon said they had just awakened from a nap and smelled smoke in the front bedroom. When they entered the bedroom, they discovered the curtains were on fire, Richards said. After determining they could not extinguish the fire, Koenig placed a 911 call to summon help.
Traffic on Highway 136 was detoured due to decreased visibility caused by the smoke. Traffic control was handled by the Hutchinson County Fire Department while the Fritch Fire Department fought the house fire.
Richards said the fire was brought under control at 4:40 p.m. and an investigation started to determine the cause. His office, along with the Hutchinson County Sheriff's Office, determined the fire started near where a candle was burning in a window located in the front bedroom. It was ruled an accidental fire.
The owner of the house said she did not have insurance and the American Red Cross arrived on scene to assist the owner and occupants with their immediate needs. Fritch Fire Department officials remained on scene to monitor the smoldering remains throughout the night. The structure and contents were a total loss and there were no injuries to the firefighters.
