Murder charges have been filed in the death of a woman in Lefors.
On Jan. 3, 2013, Texas Rangers served an arrest warrant for Joshua Keith Rigo, 28, of Amarillo, on the charge of murder, a felony of the first degree, in the death of Kristi Dawn Slatten, 42.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Daniel Hawthorne, Rigo was in custody in the Carson County Jail for the original charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
His bond was set at $300,000 and he remains in custody at the Carson County Jail.
Texas Rangers and the Gray County Sheriff’s Office will continue to process evidence and follow leads.
The next step will be to present the case to the Gray County Grand Jury.
This past Tuesday, the Gray County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in reference to a residence in Lefors.
The deputies responded to the location and found Slatten.
At the time, deputies found evidence of foul play and secured the scene.
The sheriff’s department brought in the Texas Rangers to assist with the investigation.
It was determined that the victim’s vehicle, a Chevrolet Avalanche, was missing. A warrant was issued for the vehicle.
Later that day, officers with various departments stopped the vehicle on U.S. 60, two miles west of Panhandle.
Rigo was arrested on the motor vehicle charge.
His passenger, Steve Preston Dean, 47, of Amarillo, was arrested on unrelated charges and was also taken to Carson County Jail.
