Luminarias available for Relay For Life

May 25, 2012

The time has come to purchase luminarias for this year’s Hutchinson County Relay For Life event.
Citizens are encouraged to honor a friend or loved one who is fighting a battle with cancer or remember someone who is lost with a American Cancer Society RFL of Hutchinson County Luminaria.
Luminarias may be purchased for a donation and will be featured in a special ceremony during Relay 2012, set for June 8 and 9, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., at Huber Park in Borger.
Names in memory of or in honor of are placed on white bags, which will line the Relay For Life track at Huber Park. Highlighting the events of Friday evening is the Luminaria ceremony, which will take place around dark.
Judy Allen, RFL Media Chair, said candles will be lit in each of the bags purchased to honor cancer survivors and to remember those lost. They are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the importance of their efforts during Relay.
In conjunction with the ceremony, a pictorial DVD presentation, put together by Relay volunteer Jeff Schiller, will be shown on a big screen TV located adjacent to the main stage. Those purchasing luminarias for the 2012 Relay may submit photos to honor or remember a friend or loved one.
Photos must be turned in no later than May 31 to be included in the video presentation this year. If a photo was submitted with your luminaria purchase last year, you do not have to resubmit the photo when you purchase for this year.
Schiller said, “I am very excited to be working on this project again this year. I encourage those who purchase luminarias to submit photos of those being honored. Photos showing the honoree with family members, with their pets, their hobbies, etc., are encouraged.”
Photos may be emailed to Schiller at jschiller924@gmail.com. Schiller asks that those submitting photos please note whether the photo should go in the “in honor of” section or the “in memory” section. Those not having access to email may drop their photos by Borger City Hall to Kathie Harber, who will make sure Schiller receives them for the presentation.
Those dropping off photos are asked to please make sure a name, address, and phone number is included with the photos that are dropped off so that they can be returned.
Anyone wishing to purchase a luminaria for a donation is asked to contact Traci Howell at 341-6899.
