Local resident takes own life in Hutchinson County Jail

December 15, 2013

Dustin West, 27

An inmate residing in the Hutchinson County Jail in Stinnett took his own life late Thursday night.

27-year old Dustin West hung himself in his cell sometime between 11:30 pm Thursday evening and 12:21 am Friday morning, according to a press release from the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office.

West, a resident of Borger, was incarcerated in the jail on multiple charges, including: failure to identify himself as a fugitive from justice, two bond surrenders (one for criminal trespass and another for burglary of a vehicle), forgery, fraudulent use/possession of identifying information, a parole violation warrant, credit/debit card abuse, forgery of financial instruments, and possession of marijuana.

West had been incarcerated for 66 days leading up to the incident, and had not yet been been taken before a judge for all of his alleged crimes.

According to the statement released by the Sheriff’s Office, HCSO jail staff conducted a cell check at 11:30 pm Thursday evening; they returned for another check at around 12:20 am to find that West had used pieces of his bed linens to fashion a noose in order to end his life.

The statement also noted that the Texas Rangers were called in to investigate the incident, and that the investigation is ongoing.

Though West’s motives for suicide remain unknown, what is known is that he leaves behind beloved family and friends that remember him not as an inmate of Hutchinson County Jail, but as someone who held a special place in their heart. We at the Borger News Herald offer our condolences to these people, and all those affected by suicide.
