This past weekend, three Hutchinson County baseball players were in Lubbock to take part in the Greater West Texas Baseball Coaches Association (GWTBCA) All-Star games at Pirate Field at Lubbock Cooper High School.
2012 Borger High School graduates Max Lusk and Chayse Tracy competed on the 3A/4A East All-Star squad, while 2012 Sanford-Fritch High School grade Tate Murray was part of the 1A/2A/TAPPS North team.
Lusk and Tracy were part of a team that consisted of several familiar foes including Collin Kilgo from Pampa, and Blake Turner and Tony Loustaunau of Perryton, along with players from Randall, Hereford, Amarillo Caprock, and Lubbock Estacado.
The East team took on a 3A/4A West All-Star team with players from Andrews, Canyon, Lubbock Cooper, Levelland, Seminole, and Frenship, with the West All-Star team coming away with the win.
Despite the loss, Lusk and Tracy made a good showing in the game. Lusk had a single and a walk at the plate, while Tracy went 1-for-2 with a double. Tracy would also receive the Eric Alvarez Memorial Award, which is given to a player who has overcome a lot and was able to battle through adversity.
Along with winning the Eric Alvarez Memorial Award, Tracy’s story of overcoming his battle with cancer as a child and dealing with the passing of his father this season was featured in Monday’s edition of the Lubbock Avalanche Journal.
Sanford-Fritch’s Murray teamed up with players from Floydada, Lockney, Smyer and Amarillo San Jacinto on the 1A/2A/TAPPS North team to take on a 1A/2A/TAPPS South squad featuring players from Alpine, Forsan, Idalou, Hamlin, and San Saba.
The weekend All-Star festivities also allowed the players to showcase their talents in front of college coaches and scouts.
