Local churches participating in Operation Christmas Child

November 9, 2011

Local churches are taking part in the Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child project.
This Christian based organization offers this nationwide project for children everywhere. It all starts with a shoe box. Citizens can donate toys to the churches or build their own shoe box. All you have to do is empty a standard size shoe box or a small plastic container and if you choose you can decorate it as desired, but Christmas wrapping is encouraged.
Then you will need to decide if your gift will be for a boy or a girl and make sure you choose an age group between 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Then you can print out a label at the organization’s web site at: www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC.
The rest is up to you to fill the box and drop it off to one of the local places accepting them. A few churches involved in Operation Christmas Child in the local area include First Baptist Church, Faith Covenant Church, and Bunavista Baptist.
Joel Arrington, youth minister at First Baptist Church, states, “This project is a great way for less-fortunate children to be able to receive christmas gifts.”
Once the church receives the full boxes, they are sent to the main drop-off center in Pampa at the Calvary Baptist Church. From there they are shipped to a collection center that will prepare them to be sent all around the world.
Last year a total of 6.6 million boxes went out around the world including the U.S.
Some gift ideas to include in your box are small toys, school supplies, hygiene items, candy, a personal note and a picture of you or your family. Items that should not be put in your shoe boxes are damaged items, war related, chocolate or food, out of date candy, liquids or lotion, medication or vitamins, or any breakable items such as snow globes.
