On Thursday evening, the Levelland Lobos took advantage of seven walks leading to 10 runs in the sixth inning, on their way to defeating the Borger Bulldogs 16-5 in game one of the 3A Bi-District Playoff best-of-three series.
Control issues plagued the Bulldog pitchers all evening as three pitchers combined to give up 12 walks and hit three batters through six innings of work.
Despite control issues and four errors, the Bulldogs were in position to get a late inning win by only trailing by one run, 5-6, after the fifth inning.
The first two Bulldog errors results in Curt Stafford scoring to give the Lobos a 0-1 in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Bulldogs answered back with Grant Boren hitting a lead off single and being brought in on a RBI hit by Clay Ellis.
Ellis had the hot bat for the Bulldogs on Thursday, going 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.
The Lobos scored at least one run in every inning which included converting two sacrifice flies, a RBI double by Chris Muniz, and a Borger error into runs to take a 1-5 lead halfway through the fifth inning.
Muniz got the start on the mound for the Lobos where he limited the Bulldogs to one run and two hits through the first four innings.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs led off with a single by Kota Dillard and Hunter Grey reaching base on a throwing error. Two batters later Colton Hunter connected for an infield single to load the bases with one out.
At the next at bat, Lusk put the ball in play for what appeared to the second out of the inning. But another Lobos’ error allowed two Bulldog runs to score and make it a 3-6 game. Before the Bulldogs were done at the plate, Ellis would bring in Hunter on a RBI double followed by Lusk scoring on a passed ball at home plate to make it a 5-6 score.
Unfortunately, the momentum for a late rally for the Bulldogs was taken away as four singles and seven walks led to the Lobos racking up 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning and forcing the 10-run rule after six innings of play.
Chayse Tracy got the loss for the Bulldog,s where he went 5 1/3 innings giving up 9 hits 8 walks, nine earned runs, while striking out two batters.
The series will continue on Friday evening in Levelland with game two getting underway at 5:00 p.m. followed by game three if necessary.
