WOODROW-A slow start and turnovers proved to maKe the difference in an otherwise evenly fought contest between the Borger Bulldogs and Monahans Lobos on Friday night.
Two Lobo touchdowns in the first quarter and three Bulldog turnovers, which killed promising drives, allowed Monahans to get the 21-7 win at Lubbock Cooper Pirate Stadium, to improve to 5-1 while Borger drops to 2-4.
On the opening kickoff, the Lobos took the ball 52 yards to set up their first drive at the Bulldogs 32 yard line.
Four plays later, Pedro Cano broke free for a 16-yard run into the end zone to give Monahans a 0-7 lead at the 10:12 mark of the first quarter.
After the Bulldogs’ first possession ended on the Lobos’ 38-yard line, Monahans put together a nine play drive that was capped off with another 16 yard touchdown run by Cano to give the Lobos a 0-14 lead.
After the second Lobo touchdown, the Bulldog defense settled down and did a solid job limiting the Lobo offense to 173 yards of total offense the remainder of the game.
Following the Lobos’ second touchdown, the Bulldog’s offense responded by putting together a seven play scoring drive to cut the deficit to a touchdown.
A 43 yard pass from junior quarterback Jacob Rendon to senior Miles McKinney placed the Bulldogs inside the Lobo’s 34 yard line. Four plays later, senior running back Ty Brown broke through the Lobo defense for a 22-yard touchdown run to make it a 7-14 score with 11:03 to go in the second quarter.
Just before halftime, the Bulldogs used their hurry up offense to to put together a eight play drive reaching the Lobos’ 28 yard line. However, the drive came up empty on the scoreboard on an interception at the Lobos’ 16 yard line.
In their second drive of the third quarter, the Bulldogs used their running game, including four carries for 34 yards by senior Dustin Clark, to get inside the Lobos 20 yard line. But Friday night proved to be one of the those nights when the breaks would not go the Bulldogs’ way. The drive came away empty with the football being turned over on downs.
To start the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs appeared to be finding their groove on a drive which placed them near mid-field. However, Byron Scharf came up with an interception to kill the drive and set up the Lobos on their own 48 yard line.
On third and nine, the Bulldogs appeared to be on their way to getting the ball back. However, the Lobos used some trickery with Cano taking the handoff before finding an open Lobo receiver down field for a 40 yard pass reaching the Bulldogs’ 11-yard line.
Three plays later, Freddie Garcia punched the ball into the end zone to give Monahans a 7-21 lead with 6:42 left in the game.
The Bulldogs’ insuing drive ended quickly on another interception on the Lobos’ 30 yard line. However, the Bulldogs finally received a break when Jonathan Jeter blocked a punt leading to McKinney picking up the ball and taking it to the Lobos’ 11 yard line.
But a Bulldog comeback was not in the cards, as penalties pushed the Bulldogs to the Lobos’ 24 yard line leading to the drive stalling out on the Lobo 18-yard line.
The Bulldogs will now enjoy a bye week before taking part in their final non-district game on October 14th when they host Vista Ridge from the Colorado Springs area for homecoming.
