LMNRA, Alibates announce fall operations

September 5, 2011

Fall is growing closer and Lake Meredith National Recreation Area and Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument in Fritch announces a few enjoyable fall activities for the community.
Visitors can look forward to water activities, picnicking, hiking, and special events celebrating Texas Archeology Month.
Currently there is a boat ramp available for launching boats on the lake. Sanford-Yake ramp has been extended and is now in excellent condition. Boaters should continue to park in the existing parking lots to reduce congestion around the ramp; parking is not permitted on the ramp itself.
Spring Canyon is open for fishing and swimming. Pets on the beach and littering are not acceptable.
For locals who enjoy the park’s back-country, the fall hunting season was underway as of yesterday with the opening of dove season.
Hunting maps and brochures are available at Lake Meredith headquarters, at 419 E. Broadway in Fritch.
Beginning Tuesday, September 6, 2011, the headquarters will return to normal winter hours. Boat permits will still be available through the automated machine in the headquarters’ lobby area.
Alibates Flint Quarries will celebrate Texas Archeology Month with special events throughout the month of October.
Activities kick off on October 1-2 with Alibates Rocks: FlintFest 2011, to celebrate the allure of Alibates flint.
Activities will include flint-knapping demonstrations, special tours of the flint quarries, and tours of the Antelope Creek Village ruins.
Quarry tours will leave at 10 A.M. and 2 P.M., while ruins tours will leave at 11 A.M. and 3 P.M. (October 1-2 only).
All tours are limited to 25 persons, and reservations are required.
Antelope Creek Village tours are every Saturday and Sunday in October at 11A.M.
Flint quarries offer Ranger-led tours daily in October at 10 A.M. and 2 P.M.
For tour reservations or for more information, please call park headquarters at 806-857-3151. Stay tuned to this media outlet for further details as Texas Archeology Month draws nearer.
