With tax season just around the corner, there is a new accountant in town to help citizens with all of their tax needs.
Carol L. Mahler CPA, PC (formerly known as Adams Tax Service) is located at 601 North Main inside the Sugar Rush Old Fashioned Candy Store.
The following services are available to clients:
•Personal Taxes (including ITIN)
•Business/Corporate Taxes
•Sales/Payroll Taxes (Monthly/Quarterly)
•Payroll and Bookkeeping
•DOT Paperwork
•Computer Services
As tax season gets underway, the business will extend its hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays starting the week of Jan. 28.
Mahler said the business will be set up the same way it was last year, where direct deposits can be made directly into people’s accounts. Checks can be cut, and the business will also be using a debit card system. Electronic filing is free, and prices for the tax returns are reasonable.
Beverly Lay, who works with the business, said those wishing to get their taxes done need to have everything with them, which includes their driver’s license, social security card, W2, 1099, and last year’s tax return if they are a new client.
Brenda Adams, who was the owner of Adams Tax Service, said she offered a special referral service for clients of hers that brought in new clients. Each new client would result in a $20 reward from her business. She said Mahler plans to continue this service.
She said Mahler has already helped several of her clients that were interested in incorporating. After talking with her, they have paperwork started.
“She can give a lot of good advice for those that are wanting to do partnerships,” Adams said.
Mahler is a graduate of Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in business and received certification as a CPA in 1994. She has been doing income taxes since 1988. She started her own business in 1994 in Liberal, Kan.
She has been doing some tax work in this area since the 2000s, working with Lay with on tax returns out of her home in Stinnett.
Adams said she has been doing taxes for 24 years, but she wanted to offer more services to her clients that she herself was unable to provide.
“I had met Carol, so I just asked her if she would be interested in opening a business here, so we could offer more services here,” she said. “I love doing taxes and I am going to continue to work for them. I think it’s going to be so much better for the clients all around.”
She also said the business has picked up its bookkeeping services, and these services will keep the business busy on a year-round basis.
Mahler will be coming back and forth to Borger from Kansas, and Adams said it will be great to have a CPA offering such services to Borger residents. She will be able to meet with clients at any time.
“It will be something more for Borger,” she said.
Mahler said her business will continue to offer the fast and friendly service that Adams’ clients have received in the past.
“We want everyone to feel at home when they come in, and any questions they have, don’t hesitate to ask,” she said. “That’s what we’re here for.”
The business wants to make clients aware of a 1040 filing delay announced by the IRS. The 1040 e-filing was set to begin on Tuesday, Jan. 22. However, the IRS has announced that this will be pushed back to Jan. 30. The IRS cited the need to finalize forms and to complete programming and testing of its processing systems after passage of the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA) as the reason for the delay.
The later start to the filing season means disbursement of funds will not begin until February.
