LEVELLAND-On Friday evening, the Levelland Lobos scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull ahead for the 5-3 win over the Borger Bulldogs in the 3A Bi-District Playoff Round.
The win on Friday allowed the Lobos to win the Bi-District series two games to none, after defeating the Bulldogs 16-5 on Thursday evening in Borger.
After seeing game one slip away in the sixth inning on Thursday, the Bulldogs came out focused and put together a better performance on Friday.
In the top of the second inning, the Bulldogs led off with Chayse Tracy and Ben Sharp getting back-to- back singles. Kota Dillard followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt, and Breck Nash brought in Tracy to score to give Borger a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the second inning, the Lobos threatened to get on the scoreboard when they loaded the bases with one out. But two heads-up plays in the infield allowed the Bulldogs to get off the field without giving up a run.
In the top of the fourth inning, back-to-back fielding errors by the Lobos allowed Clay Ellis and Tracy to get on base with no outs. Sharp would score the second run of the game on a sacrifice fly to centerfield followed by another Lobo error, allowing Ellis to score and give Borger a 3-0 lead.
The Lobos finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Justin Waddell brought in Ramiro Serrato on a RBI double. Curt Stafford brought in another Lobo run on a sacrifice fly to make it a one run game, 3-2, after the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Bulldog had a change to add some insurance runs when Colton Hunter, Max Lusk and Ellis each hit singles to load the bases with one out.
Unfortunately the Bulldogs came empty handed as a pop fly and a ground out allowed Levelland to get off the field without giving up a Bulldog run.
After turning a double play to end the fifth inning, the Bulldog defense and solid pitching by TJ Huffine allowed the Bulldogs to hold on to their one run lead going into the final two innings.
Unfortunately, the game started to turn in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Lobos getting on base off an error.
Two batters later, Stafford connected for an RBI double to bring in the tying run.
KJ Hurn followed and gave the Lobos their first lead in the game by hitting a RBI single to make it a 3-4 score.
The Bulldogs finally got off the field but not before a bobbled ball in the infield allowed another Lobo run to cross home plate.
Despite getting the loss on the mound, Huffine did a solid job by coming in during the second inning and pitching 4 1/3 innings with the sophomore giving up just five hits and five earned runs.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs tried to rally with Lusk hitting a single.
But the Lobos would end the 2012 season for the Bulldogs, converting a double play to seal their win.
The Bulldogs end the season 9-15, while the Lobos advance to take on Seminole in the 3A Area Round.
Going forward, the Bulldogs will have to find a way to replace six seniors who stepped up and led the team throughout the season.
But with seven players expected to return and a good group and young players coming up, the Bulldogs should be poised to make another playoff run in 2013.
