On Thursday afternoon, the Borger Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors approved the purchase of 139 acres of land off Fairlanes Boulevard (Ranch Road 1551). Thirty acres will be designated for the construction of a new multi-event center.
According to Borger EDC CEO Dan Redd, the 139 acres will be purchased at a price of $1,000 per acre for a total cost of $139,000 and will be the home for future EDC projects.
Redd said, â€śThe development of the land will allow for easy access to Highways 207 and 136 and that will be great for the event center and future projects.â€ť
EDC Board member Leon Roberts, who serves as the EDC representative on the Borger Multi-Event Center Committee (BMECC), said a lot of hours have been spent looking at finding the right location to be the home of the event center project. He said the land the EDC is willing to designate will be a great location for the committeeâ€™s plans.
For over a year, discussions have taken place on the possibility of building an event center in the Borger area that could host various events including rodeos, concerts, and motocross, as well as being available to rent by the evening or hour to host various local events. The event center project would be similar to what the Texas communities of Andrews and Vernon have done in recent years.
Both Andrews and Vernon have seen a positive economic impact on their communities and the expectations are that a similar facility in the Borger area would have a positive impact.
Roberts told the EDC Board that the BMECC is looking at grants and other avenues to help with the cost to build the event center. The center is estimated to cost around $4 million with the committee currently having around $1 million in verbal pledges in place once the project moves forward.
Redd said the main condition in designating the 30 acres is the BMECC will have five years to raise the funds needed to build the facility.
