Lake Meredith controlled burn happening today

Officials from the National Park Service and several area fire departments will conduct a controlled burn today near the Bugbee Estates community at the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area that may leave some areas off-limits to visitors, according to a press release from the National Park Service.

Officials say that an increase in moisture this year has contributed to an increase in grass growth, leaving dry fuel accumulations and creating fire hazards. NPS and fire fighters will burn the North Canyon, Triangle, and Spring Canyon areas in an effort to "to reduce the dangers associated with catastrophic wildfires that could threaten public and firefighter safety and local communities or ranchlands," according to the press release. The burn will create a barrier between the dry grasses in the park and the populated communities nearby.

The NPS notes that, "while temporary inconveniences may occur during the prescribed burn, the result will ultimately improve safety and recreational opportunities for the public."

Agencies involved include the National Park Service, the Amarillo FD, Fritch VFD, Borger FD, Stinnett VFD, the Hutchinson County Fire Marshal's Office, Potter County VFD, and Randall County VFD, according to the release.

Officials advise that travelers be aware of dangers and low visibility: reduce speeds and use headlamps if smoke is present.
