On Friday evening, the Odessa College Lady Wranglers (40-15 overall, 16-2 WJCAC) used two late inning rallies to get the two game sweep over the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen (12-34, 4-14 WJCAC) in WJCAC softball action at LINN Energy Field.
Game One: Odessa College 9 Frank Phillips College 5
Heartbreaking is the best word to describe the outcome of game one for the Lady Plainsmen. In the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Plainsmen held a 5-4 lead with two outs. But a two-run home run by Morgan Colburn turned the game upside down, as the Lady Wranglers used five back-to-back extra base hits to score five runs and pull out the 9-5 win.
The Wrangler took an early 0-4 lead, which included a three-run home run by Colburn in the top of the third inning.
However, the Lady Plainsmen rallied in the bottom of the third inning, by using four hits to score five runs to take a 5-4 lead.
Madilyne Logan and Sabrina Martinez opened the bottom of the third with infield singles, setting up Lucinda Ponce for a two RBI triple to make it a 2-4 score.
A walk to Arleen Alamanza would set up Ashlie Odle for a three-run home run to give the Lady Plainsmen the lead.
After the big third inning, the Lady Plainsmen did a solid job defensively behind pitcher Cheyenne Ford by limiting the Lady Wranglers to two hits from the fourth through the sixth innings. But the big seventh inning by the Lady Wranglers proved to be the difference between a big win for the Lady Plainsmen and the heartbreaking loss.
Game Two: Odessa College 14 Frank Phillips 13
Despite the heartbreaking loss in game one, the Lady Plainsmen were able to rebound to come out focused in game two and held a 13-11 lead going into the final inning. But once again late inning heroics would lead to the Lady Wranglers scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning and leaving Borger with the 14-13 win.
The Lady Plainsmen returned to action on Saturday hosting Midland College in a WJCAC doubleheader.
