On Monday evening, nearly perfect free throw shooting and controlling the boards on both ends of the floor helped the South Plains College Lady Texans defeat the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen 71-54 at the BCAC.
The Lady Texans out rebounded the Lady Plainsmen 48-24, giving South Plains the opportunities for several second change scoring opportunities and limiting Frank Phillips shot attempts on the other end of the floor.
At the free throw line, the Lady Texans nailed 24 of 28 attempts compared to Frank Phillips going 5 of 14 in the game.
In the first half, the combination of the Lady Plainsmen shooting 22% from the floor and losing the battle on the boards led to the Lady Texans building a 20-31 lead at halftime.
At the 16:52 mark in the second half, the Lady Plainsmen finally were able to get something going offensively by Shardena Hudson and Shay O’Neal turning back to back steals into points and Hudson and LaChrista Nash nailing three pointers to spark a 12-0 run to pull to within two points, 38-40.
The Lady Plainsmen would pull back to within two points on two more occasions in the second half, but the team could not tie or take the lead over South Plains.
The loss drops Frank Phillips to 0-3 in WJCAC play and the team will return to the court next Monday when they host New Mexico Junior College beginning at 5:45 p.m.
