Lady Plainsmen prevail in thrilling match

September 21, 2012

Alayne Bianchi goes up for the kill

The Frank Phillips Lady Plainsmen prevailed in a thriller of a volleyball match against conference foes the NMMI Broncos. FPC took it to five sets, fought hard, and came out on top.
In the first set, the ladies were up early, but NMMI came back to tie it at 12. A kill from Allison Kieweit put FPC up again, but they fell behind 20-18. NMMI would outscore the ladies 5-2 in the final points to take it 25-20.
Set two began with a lot of errors and the Lady Plainsmen found themselves down 5-2. After being down by 5, FPC tied it at 15 but eventually lost it 25-21.
FPC was frustrated at this point and took a breather. It did them good, because they came out in the third set firing. They were up 3-0 early and after a great block by Kaylyn Wright, they were up 6-2. Another block by Melissa Goncalves put the Lady Plainsmen up 9-2. Bianchi had a monster kill, and the ladies were up 13-2 and not slowing down. Bianchi was on fire with three straight kills to put FPC up 17-6. A kill from Wright would end the third set 25-15 in favor of the Lady Plainsmen.
Set four was a little closer, but a must-win for FPC. An ace from Kieweit put the ladies up 9-5. Kills from Wright and Kieweit and an error on NMMI put FPC up 17-13. Kieweit would add two more kills and Wright one more and the ladies found themselves up 20-16. Kayla Silva had an ace, and another Wright kill ended the fourth set in favor of the Lady Plainsmen 25-19.
After being tied at two sets a piece, the game went to a fifth set. The first to 15 wins, so FPC knew that they had to be on their game. FPC, however, found themselves down quickly. A Kieweit and Wright kill were the only points for the ladies early on, and they were down 8-2. Goncalves and Wright had a great block at the net plus a Kiewiet kill, and FPC was still down 10-5. The ladies were not too fond at the thought of losing the final set, so they went to work. Goncalves and Kieweit had kills, and Bianchi had two aces to bring the ladies within one, 14-13. After a great dig from Bianchi and two Kieweit kills, the Lady Plainsmen pulled out the come from behind victory and won 16-14.
It was a thrilling match and the ladies' first win at home this season. Come out and catch some exciting volleyball action at their next home game which is next Wednesday the 26th at 7:00 pm.
