On Tuesday evening, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen traveled to the Abilene area and came away with a 76-74 win over Ranger College.
After a sluggish start, the Lady Plainsmen ended the first half by going on a 7-2 run to make it a 37-33 score in favor of Ranger at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Plainsmen came out strong and built an eight point lead.
However, Ranger battled back and cut the deficit to one point, 71-70 with 1:17 left.
Fortunately, the Lady Plainsmen were able to hold on to the lead in the final minute for the win.
Overall, FPC Head Coach Eric Rodewald was pleased with his teamâ€™s effort, saying, â€śWe played really sloppy at times, but when it mattered gathered our composure and won the game.â€ť
Rodewald added, â€śStarting center Amira Sallie really stepped up and played well and Shay Oâ€™Neal made some key late plays to preserve the victory.â€ť
Sallie led the Lady Plainsmen in scoring with 21 points. Kinjita Kelley and Laâ€™Christa Nash each had 12 points, and Oâ€™Neal had 11 points.
The Lady Plainsmen improve to 4-2 overall for the season and will next play in the Seward County Classic this weekend in Liberal, Kan.
The Lady Plainsmen open the tournament playing #3 Hutchinson Community College at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
After the tournament, the Lady Plainsmen will play their home opener on Monday evening, hosting Cochise College beginning at 5:30 p.m.
