On Monday evening, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen put up a good fight in the second half against conference leaders New Mexico Junior College. But the Lady T-Birds were able to pull out the 64-49 win over the Lady Plainsmen in WJCAC play at the BCAC.
The Lady T-Birds opened the game taking a 3-11 lead by the 12:54 mark of the first half. But the Lady Plainsmen crawled back into the game, led by LaChrista Nash scoring seven first half points and Laura Martinez nailing two three pointers, to get to within two points at the 7:20 mark, 18-20.
But the Lady Plainsmen could not find a way to stop the Lady T-Birds from scoring near the basket, as Lady T-Bird post Honor Duvall scored 18 first half points to help give New Mexico JC at 23-37 lead at halftime.
The second half started with Lady Plainsmen post Destiny Phillips scoring six straight points to pull the Lady Plainsmen to within nine points. The Lady Plainsmen tried to use the good play near the basket to spark a second half comeback. But each time the Lady Plainsmen threatened to go on the run, the Lady T-Birds found a way to answer back and were able fend off a scrappy Lady Plainsmen team in the second half.
The Lady Plainsmen drop to 0-4 in conference play and to 6-14 overall, while New Mexico Junior College improves to 20-2 overall, 4-0 in conference play.
The Lady Plainsmen will next travel to take on Midland College on Thursday evening.
