On Friday evening, the Sanford-Fritch Lady Eagles started out slow and not up to par against a feisty Bushland Lady Falcon team. It was a fight from tipoff with a lot of physical rough-housing.
The Lady Eagles managed to keep their lead throughout the first quarter, in a pretty well even match with Sanford-Fritch on top 14-12.
To start the second quarter, Sanford-Fritch came out a little sluggish and let the Lady Falcons sneak back in with a 10-4 run, helping Bushland take the lead at halftime, 25-22.
Same scenario in the third quarter with back-to-back scoring that kept the score close. Bushland finished up the third quarter up by two points, 33-31.
But the last quarter was all Lady Eagle tough guts playing.
The Lady Eagles found something they liked and started a scoring drive to help them chip away and win.
A big basket by Sophomore Mikala Setliff with 6:32 on the clock put the Lady Eagles back in the lead to stay. Three big lay ups by senior Mariah Cumings put it in stone with a 43-36 lead.
Christa White, Kelsey Ham and Summer Tubbs all contributed points to force Bushland to call a timeout and only :50 left. The Lady Falcons were trailing 49-39.
The next Bushland possession was a big three point shot and caused a crazy atmosphere with a score 49-43. Lady Falcons had to foul to get a shot at tying up the score, but senior Jacy Judd answered with a couple of free throws and a steal.
The Lady Eagles win again 51-43 to seal the second place slot in district. The final home game for four Lady Eagle seniors is on Tuesday against Highland Park.
Pretty good season to get second place after being picked fifth in the pre-season.
