Tonight, the Sanford-Fritch Lady Eagles (20-10) take on the Idalou Lady Wildcats (18-12) in the 2A Girls Basketball Bi-District playoff round at Canyon High School beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Predicted to finish towards the bottom of the District 1-2A standings, the Lady Eagles did a good job coming together as a team in January to go through district play with a 8-2 record to finish in second place behind regional power Spearman.
On what the difference has been from the beginning of the season to the team’s play through district, Lady Eagles Head Coach Jason Hale credits the team’s defensive effort, saying “I feel like we have really improved the most on the defensive end. We have been able to use our pressure and get steals. which leads to easy baskets.”
Along with the good defensive pressure, the Lady Eagles have been kind of a unique team in that a different player has stepped up to lead the team in scoring one game from another.
Seniors Jacy Judd and Mariah Cumings have led the team in scoring for a couple of games, but in others the young guns of junior Kelsey Ham, along with sophomores Christa White and Mikala Setliff have stepped up to put points on the scoreboard.
In having several offensive options, Hale said, “It’s very nice to have that luxury to have multiple girls who can step up big. We never have to rely on one person to always step up. I think it makes it easy as for match ups because other teams can’t key in on one particular person to try and stop.”
There is no question the Lady Eagles are entering tonight with the expectations of going on a playoff run. But the milestone of reaching the playoffs is not going unnoticed with Coach Hale saying, “This means so much to the girls because some of the seniors have not made the playoffs in any sports. I also think it’s good for the program because now the younger girls believe we can make the playoffs.”
The Lady Eagles will take on a Lady Wildcats team who finished in third place in a solid District 2-2A behind Tulia and Littlefield.
The winner of tonight’s game will take on Kermit in the 2A Area Round.
