Friday afternoon, the Borger Lady Bulldogs got their first District 1-3A win of the season by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Dalhart Lady Wolves, 5-4, at Agnes Howe Park.
Both teams played a good game on the field. But a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning by Dalhart gave Borger the opportunity to tie the game and eventually get the comeback win.
The Lady Wolves cracked the scoreboard first off a home run over the left field fence in the second inning. The Lady Bulldogs responded by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the second inning.
Alex Lopez opened the Lady Bulldogs at bat by hitting a single to right field before being brought in on a RBI triple by Desiree Jiminez. Payden Dompe gave the Lady Bulldogs the lead on a RBI single followed by Lauren Hernandez bringing in a run on a Dalhart error at second base, making it a 3-1 game.
In the top of the third inning, the Lady Bulldogs put together a nice 4-5-3 double play. But two fielding errors helped the Wolves score a run.
Two hits and an error helped the Lady Wolves take a one-run lead off of two fielder’s choice hits to make it 3-4.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hernandez hit a nice shot to the center field fence for a triple with only one out.
Tootie Karins followed Hernandez where she hit the ball to the Lady Wolves third baseman for what appeared to be the second out of the inning. However the third baseman’s throw sailed past first base, allowing Hernandez to score to tie the game and advance Karins to third base with one out.
Sophomore Taylor Hickman quickly took advantage of the Borger momentum by hitting a RBI double to center field to give Borger the 5-4 comeback win.
Along with driving in the winning run, Hickman had a good game in the pitcher’s circle by pitching seven innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits.
The Bulldogs improve to 1-4 in district play while the Lady Wolves go to 2-3.
The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Perryton on Tuesday to take on the Rangerettes beginning at 4:30 p.m.
