After falling behind 0-5 to the Dalhart Lady Wolves, the Borger Lady Bulldogs showed a lot of heart on Tuesday evening, by battling back to tie the game 5-5 going into the seventh inning.
Unfortunately, Dalhart used two walks and two singles in the top of the seventh to bring around one run that ultimately ended the game with the 6-5 win in District 1-3A play.
Now Dalhart and Borger sit tied in second place with identical 3-5 district records, while Perryton sits one game back with a 2-6 mark. This means Saturday’s district finale up in Perryton between the Lady Bulldogs and Rangerettes will have a lot at stake in determining who ends up participating in the playoffs and who will be done for the season.
Dalhart opened last night’s game being aggressive at the plate using three hits and an error to take a 0-2 lead.
Dalhart appeared to be on their way to break open the game in the second inning by loading the bases with just one out. However, the Lady Bulldogs did a good job defensively with two pop outs to senior shortstop Lyndsey Barrow, keeping Dalhart from crossing a runner over home plate.
Early on in the contest, Dalhart was the only team that was able to get much going at the plate, which allowed them to build a 0-5 lead after the top of the fifth inning. Yet in the bottom half of the inning, the Lady Bulldogs finally started to get a groove going at the plate with Lauren Hernandez and Barrow reaching base before senior Lexi Fleming hit an RBI double to get Hernandez in to score, making it a 1-5 game.
The Lady Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but a strikeout and a pop out left the runners stranded and left the score at 1-5.
Fortunately, the momentum from the fifth carried over the next time the Lady Bulldogs were at the plate, as Barrow hit a two RBI triple, along with RBI hits by Dakota Karins and Traysha Walker to tie the game up at 5-5.
The top half of the seventh inning started promising for the Lady Bulldogs as Fleming and junior first baseman Alex Lopez teamed up for a 2-3 double play. But before the Lady Bulldogs could get off the field, Dalhart would bring in the go-ahead run to make it a 5-6 game.
The Lady Bulldogs had one last chance at the plate to force extra innings or pull off late inning heroics. Yet their time at the plate turned into a battle with the wind and a dust storm in the infield, where Dalhart would able to get the outs needed for the win.
The loss drops Borger to 16-17 overall for the season and the team will take on Perryton on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
