CANYON-Last week Borger Lady Bulldog Head Volleyball Coach Michael Littlejohn said that he expected his team to take a few lumps early in the season due to the amount of new faces on the varsity roster.
On Tuesday evening, Littlejohn’s words rang true as the Lady Bulldogs got off to slow starts against the Bushland Lady Falcons and Canyon Lady Eagles dropping both matches in three sets.
Canyon defeats Borger 10-25, 20-25, 14-25.
In the first match of the evening, the Lady Eagles had the luxury of coming into the contest playing their season opener on Monday evening against Amarillo Tascosa, while the Lady Bulldogs were seeing their first real action of the 2011 season.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a big lead on their way to a game one win, 10-25.
Fortunately, the Lady Bulldogs regrouped in game two by taking a 6-5 lead on a Nellie Embers block.
The Lady Eagles responded building a four point lead, 14-18. The Lady Bulldogs showed a little grit with a couple good defensive plays to tie game two, 20-20. But a comeback win would not take place on Tuesday as the Lady Eagles scored the final five points in game two for the win.
Game three started promising as Embers, Haley Armstrong and Kaylee Purcell made good plays at the net, leading to a 8-8 score. Unfortunately the Lady Eagles finished game three on a 7-2 run to win 14-25 and take the match in straight sets.
Bushland defeats Borger 8-25, 21-25, 27-29
Rough could be the best way to describe the start of the Lady Bulldogs’ match against the Lady Falcons, as Bushland jumped out to a 5-16 lead on their way to an easy win in game one.
Like the match with Canyon, the Lady Bulldogs were able to regroup to play the Lady Falcons tough the final two games and even had a chance to take at least one game if one or two more breaks went their way.
Game two opened with the Lady Falcons taking a 1-6 lead. However, the Lady Bulldogs fought back to tie the score that included Kristen Mills setting up Armstrong, Eakins and Purcell for four kills during a 6-2 run to make it a 13-13 game.
Two unforced errors, along with Embers setting up Armstrong for a kill, gave the Lady Bulldogs a 16-13 lead. But the Lady Falcons came flying back to take a three point lead of their own, 17-20, setting the tone for Bushland to come away with the game two win.
In game three, the Lady Bulldogs started to find a rhythm with the back and front court playing well together to once again have a 16-13 lead. The Lady Falcons answered by taking a two point lead. However, the Lady Bulldogs fought to stay alive by playing to a 26-26 tie.
A tip by Mills gave the Lady Bulldogs a 27-26 lead. But a Lady Falcon kill and two good serves gave Bushland the game and sealed the series, sending Borger to a 0-2 record to start the 2011 season.
The Lady Bulldogs will next travel to take part in the Burkburnett Tournament starting on Friday.
