Lady Bulldogs brand the Herd and Cats with losses
In past several years the Borger Lady Bulldogs have taken part in a triangular with the Hereford Lady Whitefaces and the Amarillo River Road Wildcats in Amarillo. In the triangular, the Lady Bulldogs historically left Amarillo getting a win over River Road, while having a sense of a moral victory if they were able to play Hereford tough, despite getting the loss in the match.Last night history changed as the Lady Bulldogs left River Road High School as the “Queens of the Triangular” beating both Hereford and River Road in straight sets due to a great team effort throughout the evening.Borger defeated Hereford 25-17, 25-22, 31-29.In game one the Lady Bulldogs started getting separation during an 9-2 run that included two aces by senior Bethany Harris and two kills from junior Haley Armstrong.After the run, Hereford never made a threat to tie the game as the Lady Bulldogs did a solid job defensively to set up kills for junior Emma Wood and sophomore Nellie Embers for the win.In game two a kill by senior Raygen Eakins started a 7-0 run giving the Lady Bulldogs a 19-12 lead. However this time the Lady Whitefaces fought back to pull to within two points, 23-21, on a couple of kills and unforced errors by the Lady Bulldogs.Fortunately the Lady Bulldogs kept their composure to finish game two strong and hanging on for the 25-22 win.Game three looked as if the Lady Bulldogs were on their way to an easy win, when they jumped out to a 4-0 lead. However the Lady Whitefaces quickly bounced back into the game and looked to be on their way to forcing a fourth game by holding a late 19-22 lead. But Lady Bulldogs showed they are a team that will fight until the last point by using good ball movement to set up kills for Wood, Armstrong and Embers to tie game three, 23-23.The next ten minutes showcased good volleyball as the teams battled back and forth with good volleys with neither getting the two point break needed to win the game. With the score tied at 29-29, the Lady Bulldogs received the break they were needing when Wood made the block to give Borger the one point lead. On the next play the Lady Whitefaces sent the ball into the net giving the Lady Bulldogs the point they needed to get the sweep over Hereford.In the win, Armstrong had twelve kills followed by Wood and Embers with five a piece. Wood had three blocks and senior Kristen Mills had sixteen assists.Borger defeated Amarillo River Road 26-24, 25-10, 25-19After grinding out the hard fought win in game three against Hereford, the Lady Bulldogs started the match with the Lady Wildcats sluggish falling behind 4-9.The Lady Bulldogs tied the score at 13-13, before neither team could get any separation by exchanging points to a 20-20 score. A kill and an ace led to the Lady Wildcats taking a 20-23 lead. But the Lady Bulldogs again played tough until the final point as the Lady Wildcats committed three unforced errors setting up Eakins to get the game winning kill.Game two completely belonged to the Lady Bulldogs, as good serving and net play allowed the team to build a 16-5 lead on their way to the easy win.The Lady Wildcats started game three strong to take the early lead. However the Lady Bulldogs finished with a good team effort to build a six point lead and hang on for the win to complete their sweep for the night.Eakins had eight kills against River Road, followed by Armstrong with six and Katie Ammerman with four. Eakins and Embers each had three blocks.The Lady Bulldogs improve to 5-4 on the season and will next compete in the Sanford-Fritch Tournament starting on Friday.
