Kids’ Day event to be celebrated in Borger this Saturday

Community Wide Kids’ Day, or El Día de los Niños, is the latest gift from the Latino community to mainstream US culture.Día de los Niños (Children’s Day) is celebrated in many countries throughout Latin America and the world. The United States has holidays for mothers, fathers, grandparents, teachers and a host of other adults, but no day set aside for the appreciation of children. The church Iglesia Bautista Hispana is planning a Borger National Kids’ Day event for Saturday, May 5, 2012, from 10 a.m. 3 p.m. at Huber Park. There will be games, prizes, piñatas, air rides and food.“We’re doing this because we know children sometimes get abused and neglected. In the Hispanic heritage, there is a Kids’ Day and one of the church members asked me, ‘How come we don’t celebrate Kids’ Day?’ And that’s how it started back in 2009.” said church member Juan Acosta, who is in charge of this event.“Businesses in town have been sponsoring us with toys gifts, and money and help buy the toys that we give away on that day and Power House is helping make t-shirts and banners,” he continued. They will be giving away items, everything from bicycles to Hot Wheel cars and dolls. All children are invited and encouraged to attend this fun-filled day.
