AMARILLO – John W. “J” French, 88, died Jan. 23, 2012, in Amarillo, TX.Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday January 26, 2012 at Memorial Park Cemetery with Chaplain John Elser of Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center officiating, under the direction of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.J was born December 13, 1923 in Gillam, Louisiana to DeWitt and Myrtle Lea French. J served his country in WWII with the US Army as a medic. During his service, most of his time was spent in Europe. He was stationed in Belgium, Holland, and France to name a few of his assignments, he also served at the Battle of the Bulge. J was a decorated war hero having earned two Purple Hearts, and four Bronze Stars. After the war, J moved to Amarillo and started work with the Burris Grain Elevator, now Cargill, where he retired after 38 years of service. He enjoyed gardening and fishing, a good tobacco in his pipe, and was a member of the Baptist Faith. Jay was a member of the VFW and the Order of the Purple Heart Society.Survivors include his wife Juanita Morris of the home, two grandsons, four great-grandchildren, a brother Martin French of Amarillo, a sister Joan French Blackburn and husband Don of San Antonio, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Ruth Doster French; son, Jan W. French; 4 brothers, DeWitt French, Jr., Jack French, Joe French, and Corporal Huey French (KIA-Korea); and a sister, Syble French Arriaga.The family suggests memorials be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Order of the Purple Heart Society, or a charity of your choice.
