As Amarillo Sox Vice President/General Manager Mark Lee stepped onto the field on Wednesday evening, it was clear the presentation of the Joe Frank Wheeler Scholarship is something that is dear to the man’s heart.
Lee started the presentation talking about Wheeler and the role he had played in Amarillo professional baseball and the support and work he had done over the years with Texas Panhandle area high school athletics.
Wheeler served as the PA Announcer for several years in Amarillo and prior to that worked as the voice of Borger Bulldog and Lady Bulldog athletics.
Wheeler served as the president of the Borger Chamber of Commerce from 1989-2001 and worked for Edward Jones before moving to Amarillo.
With Wheeler’s wife, Susie Wheeler on hand, Lee presented the 2011 Joe Frank Wheeler Scholarship to Amarillo River Road graduate Nicole Kimball and Bushland High School graduate Sterling Kiper.
Kiper was one of the best pitchers in the Texas Panhandle area this past season helping leading to the Bushland Falcons to a 2A State Semi-Final appearance.
Kimball was a member of the River Road Lady Wildcat softball team and plans to attend Eastern New Mexico University this fall.
The recipients were selected based on a number of criteria including leadership among peers, influence in the community, and performance on the athletic field and in the classroom.
The amount of the scholarships are worth $1,000.
In honor of Wheeler, Wednesday evening’s game against El Paso was played without a PA system.
