Jill Schneider chosen to lead National Team

April 19, 2011

On Monday, former Phillips High School athlete and Borger Lady Bulldog Head Basketball Coach Jill Schneider was selected as the head coach for the 2011 Team USA Women’s Under-16 National Team.
“It’s an incredible honor to have been selected to coach this team,” Schneider said in a statement released by USA Basketball.
Schneider, along with assistant coaches Gail Hook from Monarch High School in Louisville, Colo., and Letitia Hughley from Mott Community College and Flint Northern High School in Michigan, will lead the U-16 team at the FIBA Americas U-16 Championships scheduled for June 13-18 in Merida, Mexico.
Trials to select the 12-member team will be held May 26-30 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
Schneider grew up in the area where she attended Phillips High School and helped lead the Lady Blackhawks to back-to- back trips to the state finals in 1975 and 1976, with Schneider scoring 41 points in the championship game in 1976 to bring home the state title.
Schneider would move on and play collegiate ball at Wayland Baptist University, where she averaged almost 20 points a game over three years; and then finished playing college ball at the University of Tennessee where she averaged 19.2 points per game along with 7.3 rebounds in the 1979-80 season.
Schneider would then make her move to the coaching bench, where she worked as an assistant at the University of Texas for five years, which included being a part of the 1986 Lady Longhorn team that went undefeated on their way to the NCAA national title.
After the stint at the University of Texas, Schneider returned home to take over the Borger girls basketball program that she ran for 13 years until 1999.
After her time leading the Lady Bulldogs, Schneider has served as the head basketball coach for Lubbock Monterey for the past 13 seasons that includes leading the Lady Plainsmen to a 23-11 mark and a share of the District 2-5A championship.
