Interesting matchups highlight Borger vs Canadian scrimmage
Tomorrow morning, the Borger Bulldogs will line up against someone other than themselves, scrimmaging the Canadian Wildcats at Bulldog Stadium, starting with the junior varsity at 10:00 a.m. followed by the varsity at noon.In TheOldCoach.com pre-season statewide rankings, Canadian is listed as the top ranked team in 1A Division I due to returning a good nucleus from their 13-1 state semi-finalist team.In tomorrow’s scrimmage, one of the key matchups to watch is how the Bulldog secondary does trying to slow down the Wildcat spread attack. The Wildcat offense is led by senior quarterback Braden Hudson, who is considered to be one of the best small school signal callers in the state. Seniors Isaac Lewis, Chance Walker and Deven Carson provide the Wildcats with experienced receivers for Hudson to get the ball, while senior Taylor Schafer gives the team a dangerous weapon at running back.Eyes will be on how the Bulldog cornerbacks and safeties perform against the Wildcat skill players as senior Ty Brown is the only returning starter in the Bulldog secondary.Experience on the defensive line and linebacker, led by seniors Dustin Clark, Miles McKinney and transfer Brett Cummings, are expected to provide the Bulldog secondary help in the scrimmage by putting pressure on Hudson to get rid of the football or take a sack. On offense, coaches and fan will get to see if the Bulldogs will continue to have a great running game led by Brown and senior Adam Bumpus. In the Bulldog passing game, quarterback Jacob Rendon will take snaps in his first action against an opposing team at the varsity level. In practice Rendon has looked good rolling out to find his receivers so it will be interesting to see if the quarterback gives the Bulldogs the freedom to spread the field more than the offense did last season. The key for Rendon and the running game to have success depends on how well four new starters on the offensive line gel to block and open holes. The Wildcats have a couple of good defensive linemen, led by seniors Salvador Escamila and Cameron Pearson, who should provide a good measuring stick to see how the newcomers on the Bulldog offensive line are developing. Juniors Ben Sharp and Daniel Orona saw playing time on the varsity level on the offensive line last season.Next week, the Bulldogs travel to Hereford for a scrimmage before opening the regular season on Friday, August 26th hosting the Randall Raiders at 7:30 p.m.
