An Amarillo hypnotist brought his skills to the Borger Rotary Club Tuesday afternoon.
Gerry Kelly, who owns Hypnosis Works in Amarillo, said hypnosis has applications in a lot of other areas beyond the field of entertainment.
He said over the last 10 years, he has devoted his time to hypnosis and using it to help people better themselves. He said he sees people for all kinds of problems daily, and said he believes hypnosis is a quicker alternative to some of the more extensive forms of treatment out there.
Kelly said he has seen people stop smoking, lose weight, and overcome other types of bad habits with the use of hypnosis. He also said it is beneficial in helping people who battle insomnia and pain.
He said hypnosis works on the power of suggestion.
“Most people make the distinction of thinking our thoughts always our own, but that’s not true,” Kelly said. “We’re always being influenced by all kinds of things, advertising and other people who give us their ideas and opinions.”
Hypnosis can cause change for people, he said, because it is a bypass to the subconscious mind. He said there are two parts to our mind, our conscious mind, described as a “thinking machine” and also the subconscious mind, which is like the hard drive of a computer. All a person’s memories, experiences and beliefs are stored in the subconscious. He also said habits are stored in a person’s subconscious.
“Habits are just patterns of behavior that we have repeated often enough that our subconscious mind has adopted them as permanent, so we don’t have to think about them anymore, which is really handy,” Kelly said.
He said it is wonderful when our mind can store such things in a permanent manner, but it can also cause problems when a person is wanting to break a bad habit. He said hypnosis bypasses the critical factor, the portion of the mind that can discourage a person.
