High School Bands compete in UIL Marching Contest on Saturday

October 13, 2011

This Saturday, the Borger High School and West Texas High School marching bands will take part in the UIL Region One Marching Contest at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo.
The West Texas High Marching Band will compete in the marching contest first, taking the field at 2:00 p.m.
The 55-member Comanche Band will perform a show which features the music of Michael Jackson, including “Thriller,” “I'll Be There,” and “Billie Jean.”
Putting together the Michael Jackson show has involved a lot of fun and hard work this fall, with West Texas High Band Director David McEntyre saying, “The kids have enjoyed playing and putting this show together. We have a great bunch of kids and are working hard for our performance this Saturday at UIL Contest.”
The “Mighty Bulldog Marching Band” will take to the field at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.
This year's Borger contest show features music from the motion picture “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.” Song selections include “Fog Bound,” “Medallion Calls,” The Black Pearl,” “Blood Ritual,” “To the Pirate's Cave,” “One Last Shot,” and “He's a Pirate.”
Borger High School Band Director Kevin Kuehler has been pleased with the way his 93-member band has worked this fall putting the show together.
Kuehler said, “This year's band has a lot of sophomores and freshmen, but I have been very pleased seeing how well several of the younger band members have stepped up as leaders. This whole group of kids has been a joy to work with and they have done everything we have asked them to do.”
Last week, Amarillo ISD Fine Arts Director Cody Myers spent time working with the Borger band during a clinic, which Kuehler said benefited the band greatly.
All the homecoming festivities has made working on final preparations for contest a challenge this week. However, Kuehler feels confident his band will be good to go come Saturday.
Kuehler commented, “There's no doubt all the homecoming activities and the PSAT this Wednesday will serve as distractions in preparing for Saturday. But our goal with the band has always been to do better than our previous performance. If we perform better on Friday night than we did two weeks ago in the Monahans game and follow that with a better performance on Saturday, then I think we will be ok.”
Saturday's UIL Region One Marching Band Contest will feature the high school bands from throughout the Texas Panhandle. The contest will begin at 10:00 a.m. starting with 1A bands and will run through the evening with the 4A and 5A bands wrapping up the day.
This year 1A, 2A and 4A bands can advance to the Area Marching Contest in Lubbock on October 29th.
The Sanford-Fritch High School Marching Band is not scheduled to participate in this year's Region One Marching Contest.
