On Saturday afternoon, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen took a step towards clinching a spot in the Region V Volleyball Tournament by defeating Western Texas College in five games 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 16-14.
The match proved to be a dogfight throughout the afternoon with neither team able to accumulate any real separation, causing each point to be vital for both teams.
In game one, Western Texas took a four point, 15-19, lead on an ace. However, the Lady Plainsmen battled back with great defensive play to battle back to a 22-22 tie.
A nice kill by Rebecca Moustapha gave the Lady Plainsmen the lead and set the tone for the team to take game one.
In game two, the Lady Plainsmen came out a little sluggish, leading to Western Texas to take an early lead. Yet once again the Lady Plainsmen fought back to tie game two and even had a two point lead, 20-18.
Unfortunately the Lady Plainsmen could not hang on, allowing Western Texas to take game two 22-25.
Games three and four followed the same pattern, leading the teams to play a deciding fifth game.
The Lady Plainsmen started game five strong building a 9-5 lead. However, Western Texas was able to regroup to tie the game at 9-9.
The teams battled back and forth until a tip and a kill by Kayla Silva gave the Lady Plainsmen the final two points they needed to get the win in dramatic fashion.
The win takes the Lady Plainsmen to 20-13 overall and 3-5 in WJCAC play.
The win over Western Texas places Frank Phillips in fourth place in the conference and would qualify them for the region tournament. However, the final two matches of the season will determine who clinches the tournament spot between the Lady Plainsmen and Odessa College.
Odessa College travels to take on Frank Phillips College in Borger on Wednesday night in the final home match of the season. The match begins at 7:30 p.m.
