FPC men win in OT home opener

The Frank Phillips Plainsmen hosted their home opener Tuesday night against Lamar, CO.The Plainsmen were in control the first half with A. Johnson, McDew, Zivkovic, all contributing early. Solid defense from the Plainsmen forced a Lamar turnover and turned it into a three from Hill. Lamar answered with a 3 of their own, and Hill popped another one from behind the arc to put FPC up by 5. Solid defense again from the Plainsmen forced a steal, this time leading to a Johnson dunk. He was fouled on the play and makes the free throw. He then steals it and passes ahead to McDew who lays it in for two, to put FPC up by 9. Whelan goes the distance for two, Johnson adds two more, and Zivkovic fights inside for a goal. Scott puts up a three and a lay-up and McDew adds two free throws to put the Plainsmen up by 9 at the half, 49-40.The second half began with a three from McDew, a Scott steal, and another three from McDew. The second half was a foul-fest, with 11 fouls being called in the first five minutes. Lamar hits a three, but McDew answers with one of his own, to put the Plainsmen up by 7. McDew is fouled and makes both free throws. Lamar hits a three, and again, McDew follows up with another three. Scott misses a jumper on the next series, but Zivkovic is there to followup. Lamar climbs their way back into within 1 point. Hill, McDew (with another three), and Zivkovic all score for FPC before Nelson puts up a three to keep the Plainsmen up by 4. McDew hits a jumper with 2:15 left on the clock to put FPC up by three. With 42 seconds left, however, Lamar is able to tie it up at 88. Johnson hits two clutch free throws to give FPC a two point lead. Lamar shoots a three, and Hill is called for the foul on the shot. Lamar only makes two of the three, and it is tied at 90-90. The Plainsmen had 8.9 seconds to win it, but come up short. Overtime was all Plainsmen. Right out of the gate, Johnson goes up for the dunk and is fouled. He completes the 3 point play. McDew adds another 3 and Zivkovic has a nice block and the rebound for FPC. Scott has a nice assist to McDew who scores another two, and the Plainsmen are up by 7. Nelson, E. Johnson, Scott, and McDew all contribute in the last minutes to close this one out with authority, 107-97.Taquan McDew finished with 33 points and seven three pointers. Akeem Johnson had 22 points and 5 assists, and Ronald Scott added 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Earl Hill finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds, and the big guy, Alex Zivkovic, had 9 points and 10 rebounds on the night.Coach Chris Hackett and the Plainsmen are now 2-1 in the early season. Their next home game will be on November 13th at 7:30pm against NW Tech, KS.
