The Frank Phillips Lady Plainsmen and Ranger College Lady Rangers battled on the hardwood at the BCAC Friday night. It looked like it was going to be a low scoring affair with FPC leading 24-21 at the half. However, both of the ladies came out a little warmer in the second half, but the Lady Plainsmen came out on the short end of the scoreboard 69-63. It was a great game, with the lead changing hands thirteen times.
The first half was fairly sloppy with both teams having numerous turnovers. FPC made seventeen errors and Ranger had fourteen. The ladies cleaned up their play after the half, the Lady Plainsmen just had two until the last few minutes when they were trying to catch up, but only made six total for the second half.
Frank Phillips maintained their lead until about halfway through the second half, when Ranger began chipping away at their lead. Ranger took a 43-42 lead on two free throws with a little over ten minutes in the game. Nancy Castillo popped a three to regain the lead for FPC 45-43 with a little over nine minutes on the clock. That didn’t last long as Ranger went back up 47-45 after two successful trips to the free throw line. Kinjita Kelley hit another trey for the Lady Plainsmen to give them a 48-47 edge, but after Ranger answered with another three, they added their lead a little at a time.
The Lady Plainsmen implemented a full court press with about four minutes left in the game and immediately Shay O’Neal got the steal and the bucket. FPC still trailed at that point 58-55. Ranger then went to the free throw line but made just 1-4 for a 59-55 lead with 2:09 remaining. At this point, FPC was forced to start to foul to control the clock and attempt to chip into the Lady Rangers’ lead. That didn’t happen as Ranger was money at the foul line, going 7-10, along with a couple of Lady Plainsmen turnovers.
The scoring for Frank Phillips was fairly evenly spread out. Shardena Hudson scored ten points, two were three pointers, and she grabbed seven rebounds. Laura Martinez also had ten points. Shay O’Neal scored ten. Amira Sallie had eight points, ten boards, and had a couple of sweet blocked shots. La’Christa Nash scored eight. Kinjita Kelley had eight points and six boards, Destiny Phillips scored eight and had three rebounds, and Nancy Castillo had a three and three boards.
