On Monday night, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen volleyball team defeated Redlands Community College and Otero Junior College in straight sets to finish their three game home stand undefeated.
In both matches, Lady Plainsmen benefited from a great team effort to establish themselves as the dominate team in the BCAC defeating Redlands 25-10, 25-22, 25-15 and getting past Otero 25-22, 25-20, 25-21.
Add in the four game win over Vernon Junior College on Saturday, the Lady Plainsmen were able to make the most of their home court advantage over the past three days.
Lady Plainsmen Ashley Dyer was happy in the way the team played at home, especially on Monday, saying, “We came out aggressive and were able to play two tight matches. At times this season, we have had the tendency to be on a little bit of a roller coaster in playing with a lot of energy when things are going well but getting down on ourselves when things are not. However, we have continued to stress playing with intensity throughout the match and we were able to see that in both contest tonight.”
Against Redlands, it didn’t take too long for the Lady Plainsmen to get on a roll, taking an early 15-5 lead in game one. Setter Grecia Rivera came up big in game one putting up a pair of aces and kills to go along with five assists.
Game two proved to be a closer match with the team teams playing to a 21-20 score. However, the Lady Plainsmen did a good job finding a way to finish games strong throughout the evening, which included scoring the final three points in the 25-22 win in game two.
Against Redlands, Rebecca Moustapha and Deirdre Foree had a good match as both collected seven kills.
The Lady Plainsmen started on fire against Otero by beginning game one with an 8-1 run. Despite getting the win in straight sets, the Lady Plainsmen had to fight hard to win each game against Otero, including coming back from behind to win game three.
After trailing 1-6, the Lady Plainsmen crawled back to tie the score at 11-11, only to find themselves trailing again by three points 17-20. However, the Lady Plainsmen finished strong with a 7-2 run to win game three, 25-21, ending the evening without losing a set.
The fight from her team in game three impressed Dyer, with her saying, “The team did a really good job and that game is probably the best I have seen the team play this season. The team never gave up and played with great energy.”
The two wins on Monday improved the Lady Plainsmen’s record to 10-6 for the season.
Now the team will return to WJCAC play on Wednesday evening traveling to Roswell, N.M. to take on the NMMI Lady Broncos.
NMMI swept the Lady Plainsmen in their first match of the season. However, Dyer knows she is coaching a completely different team from the one that played the Lady Broncos in August.
Dyer said, “The first match with NMMI was the first match this team play together period. Our team definitely has changed since that first match especially in being able to mess well and come together as a team. We are not the same team NMMI saw in that first match and I think that will work to our advantage.”
After the match with NMMI, the Lady Plainsmen will travel to Kansas for tournament play on Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Plainsmen next home game is scheduled for next Monday, September 26th against Lubbock Christian JV beginning at 7:00 p.m.
