FPC’s Smith earns All-Conference and All-Region honors

After an impressive freshman softball season, Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen outfielder Janelle Smith was named to the First Team WJCAC All-Conference and the Region V All-Region teams for the 2011 season.Smith posted a .353 overall batting average, including a .385 mark in conference play, along with 41 hits, 21 runs, seven doubles, two homeruns and 20 RBIs.The production at the plate impressed FPC Head Softball Coach Jenneffer Kohler, who said, “When she came into the program in the fall we were told that she had the potential to perform well. However, I will say she went far above the expectations I had for her as a freshman.”In looking at Smith’s numbers you can see that the outfielder has some power, but Kohler said what sets Smith apart is how well of a job she does putting the ball in play.A Victoria, British Columbia, native, Smith is just the latest from a Canadian pipeline of players that have came to Borger to be a part of the Lady Plainsmen program and have had success in doing so.In why FPC has enjoyed success in attracting solid players from Canada, Kolher said, “It’s kind of a different world up there because there are limited opportunities for players to be able to play and get an education. I am not exactly sure how the relationship with the people in Victoria and us started but there is no question we have had several players come from there that have played key roles in are program, including Janelle.”Not only has Smith enjoyed success on the field, but the freshman also had a good year in the classroom by holding a 4.0 grade point average for both the fall and spring semesters. The good news for Kolher and the FPC Softball program is Smith is expected to be back with the team next season.Smith is the first player to receive All-Region honors in the FPC Softball program.Earning WJCAC All-Conference honorable mention honors was sophomore outfielder/pitcher Rachelle Vasquez.A Howard College transfer, Vasquez had a solid season with 22 runs, 42 hits, eight doubles, triple, 17 RBI’s while striking out seven times in 134 plate appearances.WJCAC Softball All-Conference Team
