Former Borger coach leads team to gold

Former Borger High School coach, Jill Rankin Schneider coached the USA Jr. National U17 girls to a gold medal this past Sunday at the FIBA World Championships in Amsterdam,The Netherlands. They went undefeated in the tournament and beat a tough Spain team, 75-62, in the final game.
Schneider has just started her 15th year with Monterey High School in Lubbock, TX. She has been named the district's coach of the year three times, and was chosen as the All-South Plains 4A/5A Coach of the Year by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. She teaches college algebra at Monterey as well.
She began her coaching career at the University of Tennessee where she was a student assistant under Pat Summitt. She was also an assitant coach at the University of Texas for five seasons under Jody Conradt. After leaving Texas, she became the head coach at Borger High School. In 1994, her squad reached the 4A state semifinals. That year, she was also inducted into the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame and was named Borger's Citizen of the Year.
She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. She was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Women's Basketball Team that did not compete in the Olympics that were held in Moscow. As a coach, she led the U16s to gold in 2011 as well.
As a collegiate athlete, Schneider played for Wayland Baptist and the University of Tennessee. She still holds many records at Wayland including single-game field goals made and attempted, single-season field goals made and attempted, single-season rebounds, and single-season scoring average. She received many rewards (including All-American) in her time at Wayland.
As a senior at Tennessee in 1979-80, she helped lead the team to a national championship game with a 33-5 record. She was named to the All-American team, making her one of a select few athletes to be named as one of the nation's top ten players at two different universities. She was also named the GTE Academic Player of the Year. She has also been inducted into the University of Tennessee Lady Vol Hall of Fame after playing just one year there.
Before her college career, Schneider was an all-state player for Phillips High School, who won a state championship in 1976. She once scored 81 points in a game! She still holds many state tournament scoring records. She was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. In 1999, she was honored as one of the Top 100 Sports Legends of the Texas Panhandle by the Amarillo Globe-News.
