Fatal Two-Vehicle Accident Saturday Claims One Life

A local Borger man died after injuries he received in a two-vehicle accident Saturday on South Highway 136.
Forty-five-year-old Edgar Velazquez-Lopez of Borger was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Cindy Irwin at Golden Plains Community Hospital after a two vehicle accident six miles south of Fritch Saturday afternoon, according to Texas Department of Safety officer Chris Ray.
According to the DPS, a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Gabriel Chavez was traveling southbound on South Highway 136.
The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Velasquez-Lopez was traveling northbound.
The Blazer entered the northbound lanes of traffic striking the Grand Caravan head on.The Blazer spun around and came to rest in the center of the roadway facing northbound, Ray said.
Grand Caravan spun around during the collision and was deflected into the east barrow ditch. The Grand Caravan struck a tree with the rear right of the vehicle and came to rest upright facing southbound. Alcohol is believed to be a factor, Ray said.
Thirty-eight-year-old Chavez of Pampa was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital Amarillo Texas with incapacitating injuries. He is reported in serious condition.
All three passengers in the Grand Caravan were injured.
Leticia Varel-Lopez, 39, and Luz Maria Martinez, 74, both of Borger, were both taken to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo. Varel-Lopez was reported in serious condition and Martinez was reported in stable condition. One-year-old Christen Velazquez-Lopez was reported in stable condition.
