From time to time in sports you will have a game where the final score doesn’t tell the story on how close a game actually was. Friday night featured one of those games, when the Bushland Falcons and Borger Bulldogs squared off in an entertaining contest at Tex Hanna Gym with the Falcons getting the win 65-58.
The Bulldogs had a good night in shooting 48% on the floor. But 22 turnovers and 34 trips to the free throw for the Falcons caused the Bulldogs to play catch up most of the evening instead of potentially pulling away for a big win.
Bushland opened the game taking a quick early 0-4 lead. However, the Bulldogs answered with Grant Boren nailing two three pointers to take an 8-6 lead.
The Falcons came back down and used a three pointer by Colter Cornelius, which gave Bushland an 8-9 lead.
The second period started with the two teams going back and forth until the Falcons capitalized on three Bulldog turnovers to go on an 8-0 run to build a 17-27 lead.
The Bulldogs regrouped and went inside for baskets by Seth Rawlinson, Daniel Salinas, and Tyrell Haynes to pull back to within four before the half.
In the second half, the Falcons came out strong to score six straight to build a 27-39 lead by the 6:40 mark of the third period.
However, the Bulldogs were able to respond and cut their deficit down to seven points, 36-43, going into the fourth period.
The Bulldogs continued to gain some momentum in the beginning of the fourth period and were able to pull to within three points, 43-46, off a three pointer by Jamon Hearon.
Behind the three point line was a nice spot for the Bulldogs down the stretch with Boren and Dillon Carrillo nailing threes. But, key rebounds and converting 16/26 fourth period free throws allowed the Falcons to hang on to their lead and leave Borger with a win.
The Bulldogs go to 5-8 for the season will next travel to Stinnett on Monday to take on the West Texas High Comanches beginning at 6:30 p.m.
