Errors costly for Comanches in Bi-District baseball loss
West Texas High was in a must win situation Friday afternoon in Canyon. Facing Lockney for game two of a best of three series, the Comanches played a much better game than the first one, but they fell a little short, losing 10-8 and bowing out of the baseball postseason. Errors still plagued the Tribe as they were charged with seven. The team played on turf, which could have caused some of the problems. Jess Shields pitched 3 and 1/2 innings and had 3 strike outs, walked 1, and allowed 8 runs, just one was earned. Carlos Juarez pitched the last half of the game. He struck out 2, walked 4 (one was intentional), and allowed only one run, it was earned. The Tribe looked good out of the gate, the Longhorns went three up and three down. The bats were also working for WT yesterday and Lockney’s pitcher started the game a little wild. He hit two Comanche batters and walked two. One run walked in, then Shields got 2 RBIs when he banged a double to right field. West Texas led 4-0 after the first inning. After a perfect first inning, costly mistakes gave the Longhorns four runs off three errors in the second inning. The Comanches answered back in the bottom, with back-to-back doubles by Tyler Hoff and Ty Lay. Lay’s almost went yard, but hit the top of the 310 ft mark of the fence for a double. WT led 6-0 after two.One error on the Tribe cost them two more runs in the top of the third and the game was tied at six. WT went three up and three down in the bottom and the game remained knotted at six. Two more mistakes in the top of the fourth gave Lockney a 9-6 edge. Spencer St. Charles led off for with a nice base hit into center field. Juarez was hit in the head by the pitcher and was on. Lay sacrificed in a run, and Juarez stole home just sliding under the catcher’s tag. WT trailed 9-8 after four innings.Lockney went three up and three down in the bottom of the fifth. A sweet little pick off from Juarez to Lay at first ended the Longhorn part of the inning. St. Charles was the lone Comanche base runner on a hard hit ball over second base, but he was stranded and WT still trailed 9-8 after five complete.Juarez fanned the first two Longhorn hitters, but loaded the bases on a double and two walked batters. He got out of the inning unscathed on a play from second to first base. Lockney left the bases loaded. Hoff led off with a base hit to center, but he was left on base with the Longhorns still hanging on to a one point lead. A couple of walks and two singles into the outfield scored another run for the Longhorns in the top of the seventh to give them a 10-8 lead. The Comanches were down to their last 3 outs. Unfortunately, they went down 1,2,3 to end the game and the season for West Texas.
