Electrical fire under investigation by officials

December 20, 2012

The Borger Fire Department and Xcel Energy responded to a fire at an electrical substation on Spring Creek Road early Wednesday morning that was caused by a possible intrusion, resulting in electricity going out for several Borger residents.
Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards said the call came in at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday.
The fire resulted in a power outage on the east side of Borger, and power was out for approximately two hours.
Richards said there was evidence of possible intruders at the substation, and Xcel Energy and the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office are conducting an investigation to determine exactly what happened.
Xcel Energy was able to reconnect and redirect transmission lines to the City of Borger.
There were officers doing traffic control at the intersections on Florida Streets.
The Borger Police Department and EOC volunteers directed the traffic.
Richards said the traffic control was important because the traffic lights were out, and they wanted to ensure the safety of drivers traveling those areas during that time period.
The Borger News-Herald will continue to follow this story and release information as it becomes available.
